Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), the premier institution of higher learning in northern Philippines, was founded on January 6, 1978 by virtue of Presidential Decree 1279. MMSU’s mandate is to provide advanced education in the arts, agricultural and natural sciences, as well as in technological and professional fields. Through the years, the university has defined itself through excellence in its core functions: instruction, research, extension, and resource generation. It is recognised as a model for the rest of the SUC system in the Philippines for its notable research and development activities, international linkages and commercialisation of innovations. 

MMSU is one of the top performing schools in professional licensure examinations and a consistent producer of board topnotchers. It has been recognised as National University for Fisheries Agriculture and awarded a 3-Star Institution Rating by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
