What is the name of your social enterprise?
Fishers & Changemakers, Inc.
What is your social enterprise all about?
Fishers & Changemakers, Inc (FCI) is a pioneer social enterprise that partners with local artisan fishers, the poorest sector in the Philippines, to produce high-quality Balangay's Best seafood products using sustainable technologies and equitable business practices.
It was established last October 2014 during the rehabilitation efforts in Bantayan Island in Cebu to make a positive impact to the lives of the Artisan Filipino Fishers particularly on economic, social and environment.
At present, FCI is now expanding to more fishing communities nationwide while creating synergy with multi-sector partnerships.
What is the inspiration behind your social enterprise?
We started the social enterprise for the Artisan Filipino Fishers from Bantayan Island in Cebu. As we journey with them exploring possible ways to collaborate, we were exposed to their heartbreaking situation and understand the need of creating a holistic approach "from catch to plate" to fill-in the gaps and their disconnection from opportunities.
HOW DOES YOUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE IMPACT OTHER PEOPLE?
Primarily, the Fishers and their families are the main beneficiaries for the said social enterprise by doubling their family income and empowering fisher-entrepreneurs. The second beneficiaries are the consumers for they can easily available high-quality, hygienic and wild-caught sustainable seafood while contributing to marine conservation.
HOW WAS THE ACTIVE CITIZENS PROGRAMME ABLE TO HELP YOU AND YOUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE?
Through Active Citizens, I was able to have enough time to reflect on the purpose and core values of our social enterprise which was very helpful to figure out how we would scale-up. At the same time, I've got an incredible support group and mentorship from British Council and fellow Active Citizens whom I can collaborate and share best practices or whatever I needed. It feels like I have extended family who inspires, helps and support me in all possible means. It was too fun and inspiring seeing each other excel in our respective social enterprises.
